A brilliant article, Hob. Thanks for sharing the link. Now I know why I stared at the Martha recipes in fascination but couldn’t even begin to find the energy to make one. I’m interested, but intimidated. Nigella, on the other hand, leaves me feeling completely capable in the kitchen. Her can-do attitude, as well as her positioning of food making and enjoyment, is so much more inclusive. As well as sexy.
What a great article! If I’d known I could write about fun stuff like food and cooking, I might have finished my degree 😉 Your Martha/Hester analogy is just brilliant.
I agree with Charlotte — Nigella’s persona is so much more appealing and inspiring than Martha’s!
I laughed out loud (in my office) about Martha’s romantic views on Poe and Flaubert. Foreign names always seem chic, but it backfires when you don’t know what you’re speaking about!
